With roots in Valpolicella Classica stretching as far back as 1772, Masi has garnered deep knowledge of their local land. Today, the sixth- and seventh-generation family owners have more than 250 years of experience to draw from. 

Masi’s prestigious ‘Costasera’ Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG was born from this wealth of knowledge. Costasera, meaning evening hillside, is named for the west-facing slopes that enjoy the warmth of the setting sun. The extra hours of sunlight on these vineyards allow the grapes to fully ripen and develop complex aromas and flavors. Costasera is made exclusively from these vineyard sites within Valpolicella Classica and the profile showcases all the attributes of the terroir. 

Costasera also represents Masi’s unrivaled expertise in the appassimento winemaking technique. Here, Masi’s blend of traditional grapes—Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara—are laid out on bamboo racks and partially dried in order to concentrate their aromas and flavors. Masi pioneered the trademark AppaXXImento, which certifies Masi’s expertise in the appassimento method in the 21st century (the XXI in its name).

Another standout feature of Costasera is its consistency. If the region experiences extreme weather conditions, Masi employs a unique system called NASA (Natural Appassimento Super Assisted) to recreate the ideal temperature and humidity conditions required for grape drying. This system is rarely used, but it ensures consistency in the wines’ taste profile as well as Masi’s high quality standards.

Tasting Notes for Masi Costasera’ Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOCG

Costasera has a firm structure while remaining soft on the palate, with velvety tannins and round acidity. On the nose, the wine has aromas of dried plums and cherries, while the palate offers notes of chocolate and coffee. The finish is long and fruit-forward, with a gentle spiciness at the end.
